What is PEEK?
PEEK, short for polyetheretherketone, is a specialized high-performance polymer.. Possessing semi-crystalline properties, it is known for its high chemical resistance and temperature tolerance. With a high glass transition temperature (289.4°F) and melting point (633.2°F), PEEK offers outstanding load-bearing thermal deformation temperature, reaching up to 600.8°F with 30% glass fiber or carbon fiber reinforcement. This makes it ideal for long-time exposure to temperatures up to 482°F. Compared to other high-temperature plastics such as PI, PPS, PTFE, and PPO, PEEK boasts an upper temperature limit of approximately 122°F higher.
Structural Formula of PEEK
Material properties of PEEK:
- High Heat Resistance: PEEK exhibits superior heat resistance to other plastics, along with high modulus, strength, toughness, and dimensional stability.
- Low Thermal Expansion: PEEK demonstrates minimal dimension variation and a low coefficient of thermal expansion.
- Excellent Chemical Resistance: PEEK demonstrates excellent resistance to acids and alkalis, approaching the corrosion resistance of nickel steel, and possesses radiation resistance.
- Wear Resistance: PEEK resin maintains high wear resistance and low friction coefficient even at temperatures up to 482°F.
- Suitable for Plastic Injection Molding and CNC Machining: PEEK’s high heat resistance makes it suitable for injection molding and its toughness and dimensional stability make it highly compatible with CNC machining.
- Good Self-Lubrication: PEEK exhibits good self-lubricating properties, achieving a mechanical balance between insulation and conductivity.
How to 3D Print PEEK?
Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) Technology:
FDM is a common 3D printing technique that utilizes a nozzle to melt PEEK filament. Typically, the nozzle will be heated up to around 392°F for materials like PLA or ABS, but with PEEK’s high melting point (649.4°F), the nozzle temperature is set between 752°F and 842°F. Additionally, to ensure proper adhesion of the extruded material to the print bed and minimize the risk of platform warping and deformation, the print bed will be heated to 212°F to 302°F. Maintaining a constant temperature of around 212°F inside the build chamber is essential to ensure stability during PEEK manufacturing.
Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) Technology:
SLS technology utilizes PEEK powder for laser sintering forming. The build chamber of industrial 3D printing equipment requires the temperature to be controlled at 725 °F constantly. Unlike FDM technology, SLS surfaces lack noticeable layering but may exhibit a granular texture. The support removal of SLS is relatively easier since the support material is the original unsintered powder. However, the cost of SLS is higher than FDM due to its high equipment cost, post-processing requirements, replacement rate, etc.

Applications of 3D Printed PEEK
- Aerospace Industry: PEEK is extensively used in the aerospace industry due to its ability to replace aluminum alloys, resulting in a 70% weight reduction in aircraft or spacecraft and improved fuel efficiency.
- Medical Industry: With excellent biocompatibility, fully processed PEEK can come into short-term contact with the human body.
- Automotive Industry: PEEK’s excellent wear resistance and mechanical properties make it suitable for replacing ABS explosion-proof devices, seals, and brake systems in automobiles.
- Consumer Electronics and Semiconductor Industry: PEEK’s excellent insulation and high-temperature resistance make it suitable for various applications . For example, PEEK is employed in the construction of chambers and enclosures used in semiconductor manufacturing equipment, providing electrical insulation and thermal stability in high-temperature environments.
In conclusion, PEEK 3D printing presents a comprehensive solution for crafting high-performance polymer components renowned for their exceptional heat resistance and chemical resilience.
